Work Experience is Key to Career Clarity

Towards the end of my second year at University I realised that I needed to start making some serious decisions about possible career options following my Bachelor’s degree. At the time I was leaning towards Business Psychology, but as with everything, you don’t know if something is actually right for you until you try it. As such, I was so excited when I saw the opportunity for internships at Zircon, and I applied straight away.
From the moment I walked in through the door on my first day I was made to feel like a part of the team, not only through everyone’s welcoming approach but also through the work I was given. Work Experience at Zircon isn’t what everyone assumes work experience is like, you’re never bored because of the massive range of work you are taking part in; in fact the only thing I got bored of was telling my friends and family that “no, I don’t just make the tea.”
On day one I started by proofing work relating to Zircon’s newly released whitepaper on Winning Attitudes. From there the range of tasks I was involved in was endless, from writing blogs about the Olympics and Winning Attitudes, to designing rating scales for case studies. As a new intern, the amount of work you are given to complete can at first seem daunting but everyone is always more than happy to take time out of their day to help. I know people always say you should make sure to ask as many questions as possible when on work experience but this can seem like you’re being an inconvenience. However, at Zircon you are never made to feel like that, the team here always have time for your queries, and are always happy to share their knowledge.
The Zircon office is also a great place to be, it is a continuously evolving environment with a constant stream of exciting news flooding through the office; it really has been an exciting time to be a part of Zircon. Spending time in an atmosphere like this is inspiring and a perfect place to learn; being surrounded by people who are so passionate about the work they do motivates you to do the best work you can.
I really am so grateful for my time here, which has confirmed my career choice and clarified all my unanswered questions. After my short time here I am certain that this is the path I wish to pursue and for this reason I cannot recommend work experience enough to anyone who isn’t completely certain of what they want to do.
